Event Description : Inaugural exhibition of 19th Century Oleographs from the Raja Ravi Varma Press.

We are delighted to announce the opening of our new gallery space at Lado Sarai and in our Opening Show, we bring to you phenomenally popular Oleographs’s from The Raja Ravi Varma Press. These works are each over 100 years old and many of them are individually hand crafted, embellished with Zari and stunningly draped in fabric, making them unique works of art. They are extremely well priced and we would be delighted to assist with any queries you may have.

Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906), credited with being the pioneer of Modern Art in India, was also one of the first to marry Indian and European styles of art and is remembered in particular for illustrations of Hindu gods and goddesses using human models  and was the first Indian artist to master the use of the oil medium. Oleography is a method of reproducing an oil painting on paper in such a manner that the stone-printing procedure allows exact brushstrokes and patterns to be replicated with multitudes of tones and a diverse colour palette.

The Ravi Varma Lithographic Press was started in 1894 in Bombay. Ravi Varma partnered with a local entrepreneur, Govardhandas Khataumakhanji  and solicited the services of German technicians for the Press. The works initially were to be sent to Europe to be oleographed, but Raja Ravi Varma set up a press himself and employed Europeans in India. No popular print maker or printing press at the time could match up to Ravi Varma in reputation.
The first picture printed at Varma’s press is said to be The Birth of Shakuntala. This was followed by an array of images of gods from the Hindu pantheon, including Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganpati, and Vishnu and his avatars such as Rama and Krishna. We also see extensive series of oleographs representing women figures from Hindu mythology such as Damayanti, Menaka, Shakuntala, and Rambha.
