Event Description : "Phenomenology of Perception" an exhibition of work by Artists Nurjahan Akhlaq (b. 1979, Pakistan), Parul Gupta (b. 1980, India) and Yasmin Jahan Nupur (b. 1979, Bangladesh)
Taking its title from the seminal book of the same name by Maurice Merleau-Ponty, the focus of the show extends the idea of seeing and thereafter posits an alignment of three artistic practices that are rooted in the aesthetics of line, space and memory. Each body of work oscillates between the formal, the abstract, the spatial, the personal and the political. Often times these frameworks are being negotiated simultaneously such that none are mutually exclusive of the other. The juxtapositions that materialize within the exhibition space move the viewer at times purely in terms of physicality, while at another instance through metaphors; lyrical and fragmented. The exhibitions intention is to consider each practice as a way to present intersections within which the discourse of ‘perception’ itself can be situated.

The works of Gupta, Akhlaq and Jahan Nupur negotiate deeply layered relationships, positioning the formal and conceptual practice of drawing and collage to architectural space, abstraction as ornamentation and the gesture itself as both personal and political.
