Event Description :
"Indian Deities Worshipped in Japan" Photographs & text exhibition by Benoy K Behl.

Deities we have practically forgotten in India, such as Vayu and Varuna are still worshiped in Japan. In fact, there are hundreds of shrines to Saraswati alone and innumerable representations of Lakshmi, Indra, Brahma, Ganesha, and Garuda among other deities. Prof Benoy Behl, Art & Culture Historian and Photographer would share his experiences and insights during his visit to Japan in spring 2015, under the Fellowship of Japan Foundation. He would also deliver a lecture about the ‘Indian Deities Worshipped in Japan’ and how the ancient Indian culture, philosophy and ancient script are still preserved in Japan.

Most people are not aware that numerous Hindu deities are very actively worshipped in Japan. In fact, there are hundreds of shrines to Saraswati alone. There are innumerable representations of Lakshmi, Indra, Brahma, Ganesha, Garuda and other deities. In fact, deities we have practically forgotten in India, such as Vayu and Varuna are still worshipped in Japan.

In many ways, Benoy find that Japan has preserved ancient Hindu traditions, even when they may have changed here in India. A study of Japanese Buddhism also provides missing links in our study of the evolution of Buddhism in its present form in Tibet.
