Event Description : "Iconic Artists: Significant Works in Contemporary Indian Art" a talk by Dr. Geeti Sen, MA '68.
This talk is based on Dr. Sen’s book titled “Your History gets in the Way of My Memory”, published by Harper Collins in 2012. This talk was first delivered at the National Museum, focusing on the lives and work of artists Manjit Bawa, M.F. Husain, Ganesh Pyne, S.H. Raza, Nilima Sheikh and Anupam Sud.
The author met these six artists in late 1970s and 1980s. It was only a decade or more later that these artists became celebrated icons, and about the year 2000 that contemporary art of India began to receive world recognition. In this talk the author shares her experiences and moments with each of the artists often at turning points in their works and life.
Dr. Geeti Sen holds a M.A. degree from the University of Chicago and is a cultural historian and author of six major books on Indian Art. She was the art critic for The Times of India, Mumbai and for India Today. She was also assistant editor at Marg, Mumbai. From 1982 to 2006 she was Chief Editor of publications at the India International Centre (IIC), New Delhi.
