Event Description : An exhibition of Prints & Watercolours by M.F. Husain & Devraj Dakoji.
M.F. Husain
M.F. Husain was a self-taught artist who began as a billboard painter while creating designs for furniture and toys in the 1930s in Mumbai. He was already familiar with mediums of screen-printing and poster-making. In the 1940s he joined the Progressive Artists Group along with F. N. Souza, S. H. Raza, K. H Ara, S. Bakre and Gade.
From live painting and drawing, to experiments in creating serigraph prints, Husain’s motto was to disseminate art in as many ways as possible, including prints that could be acquired by a large number of people.
Husain’s depiction of the icons of Indian culture, through the ages are an effort to capture the quintessence of his subjects, like the Mother Teresa, Mahabharata, Horses and Calcutta series.
Devraj Dakoji Watercolours
In his new watercolours, Devraj Dakoji continues to use the symbol of the bird on a bicycle in flight. Devraj believes that “The moving wheel represents the life force in living beings. One wheel is ourself, the other wheel is spiritual energy.” His fluid landscapes reveal a spiritual world where mythic creatures dance with abandon and in celebration. It is interesting to note that a new icon of a bearded man and a horse have become a part of Devraj’s pantheon of emancipated creatures.
