Event Description : 'Intertwined Plasticity' an exhibition of artworks by Sunil Padwal, 'Follow Piece' by Abir Karmakar, and 'Brick Wall Diary' by Unnikrishnan C.

Intertwined Plasticity by Sunil Padwal is a work in three segments that draws on the past and present to mingle personal perspectives with reality of the present day. Working like a memory palimpsest, the drawings by Padwal oscillate between abstraction and clarity, with an underlying sensitive vocabulary. Rendered in intensively fine lines, the works possess a striking graphic immediacy. The drawings enact an assemblage of unspoken thoughts in multiple layers.

Follow Piece by Abir Karmakar is a series of paintings dealing with issues of voyeurism and privacy. Alluding to Vito Acconci’s performance art piece, titled ‘Following Piece’ (1969), Karmakar proposes a moment of hyper voyeurism in the post-internet age that one is currently living in. He captures this virtual moment on canvas, turning to the inner sides of keyholes and suggesting a world where one is viewing private lives and personal spaces through technological devices. The quiet of seemingly ordinary scenes has a lingering disquiet as the viewer witnesses them not through the frame of natural vision but through the filter of a camera lens.

Brick Wall Diary by Unnikrishnan C. is an independently constructed wall with painted imagery and Malayalam texts layered in wit and ingenuity.
Unnikrishnan has meticulously carved bricks that were created in his hometown Pezhumpara. Assembled as a wall dissecting the space, together these fragments suggest various structural possibilities of space and human behaviours in certain contexts.
Unnikrishnan’s paintings and carvings on bricks chronicle intimate scenes of life in the city and anecdotes of his relations with people and objects. These ordinary vignettes reveal the artist’s urge to archive objects and ways of living that face extinction, as rural Kerala anticipates the collapse of traditional economies centered on craft and textiles.
