Event Description : "Thus, The Story Began...." An exhibition of artworks by Jitendra Singh Baoni
My art work has developed and evolved over time. It has always been somewhat accidental and the results have always reflected my thoughts in a way that would not have been possible intentionally.
Every sphere of life has a story behind it, be it politics and sports, or love and emotions. Through my artwork, I try to portray the story behind every story. The most simple and mundane objects may have a rich legacy behind them.
The changing light of day and the moods it creates are the foundations of my watercolors. My paintings usually start with a color idea, which then evolves into compositions wherein color is the primary subject. I find art to be a synthesis of personal feelings, the subject or colors that inspire me and my materials and techniques.
I like to build up my paintings in layer upon layer. I love to work with different media, oils, though charcoal has fascinated me always. I relish the sensual experience of spreading thick oil paint with the palette knife or using my fingers to rub it into the paper.
When starting on a new painting I usually have only a rather loose string thoughts of the finished piece, but as soon as I get started the work takes on a life of its own with its own history and its own future. Each stroke builds on the one that preceded it. What has come before is never completely annihilated but lives on like traces of the past.
My objective is not to talk about what the material world looks like, but rather to translate my experience of life into abstract poetic imagery.
To me the drama that arises when the various abstract elements meet and interact on the canvas becomes a reflection of the fundamental existential drama of contemporary life – a floating, continuously changing process rather than something static or unequivocal. Each pictorial element, in its interaction with all other elements, becomes an organic entity, inviting the multiplicity of associations inherent in all human experience.
