Event Description : Sajeev Fresh collaborates with Nirvaaha for the talk "The Edible City: What and Why We Need to Grow in Urban Spaces".

First: a talk on the importance of growing food in urban spaces, and following this, a hands-on workshop on how to grow food in the city. And best of all, the Nirvaaha kitchen will be serving refreshments to all participants!

TALK:

Earlier this year the Delhi High Court declared the city’s fruit and vegetables unfit for humans. We are consuming pesticides every day – this is common knowledge. But what are our alternatives? Expensive ‘organic’ produce? Not necessarily. A number of Delhiites have begun getting their hands dirty and growing food on terraces, balconies and what used to be lawns. From supplementing the salad bowl to cutting vegetable costs by half, homegrown produce is making its way onto people’s dinner plates. This talk will discuss the need to grow food in urban spaces and the successes and failures of Delhiites who’ve taken their first steps towards connecting with their food.

This talk is based on a gift economy (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gift_economy

After the talk, the hands-on fun begins!

WORKSHOP:

Introduction to Kitchen Gardening: Let’s Get Our Hands Dirty!

- How do I start my kitchen garden?
- What size gamla will lauki need?
- How much should I water my cucumbers?
- Shall I speak to my karela plant in Hindi or English?

We’ll answer all of these questions and many more in this practical workshop on growing vegetables, fruits and herbs at home. (Karela originated in the tropics so probably speaks Hindi better, btw). Roll up your sleeves and get ready to learn the basics of designing and planning a garden; seeding, weeding, and harvesting; pest management; and composting. But don’t just expect theory, you will also create your own sapling pot, learn to identify seeds and pick up the basics of companion planting. We guarantee you will not leave this workshop without getting your hands muddy!

What you’ll take away from this workshop:
- Confidence to start your own edible garden
- Excitement about plants
- 2 gobar pots: one seeded, one saplinged
- Your nails full of mitti!
