Event Description : "On comics" FICA Master Class with Orijit Sen.
FICA invites you to register for a workshop on comics which will be conducted by Orijit Sen.
This workshop is designed as an introduction to the diverse practices of visual storytelling, with a focus on Comics as a medium. Participants will be guided through the process of conceptualizing and executing a short comics project over the course of the week. They will have the opportunity to explore, among other things, time and space in comics, visual narrative construction and editing, character design, page layout and the use of graphic styles and techniques. A strong interest in drawing, combined with a love for telling and listening to stories are pre-requisites.
Orijit Sen (born 1963) is a graphic artist, cartoonist and designer based in New Delhi, India. He studied graphic design at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. He is one of the founders of People Tree - a collaborative studio and store for artists, designers and craftspeople. Orijit started collecting and drawing comics in his early teens, and has been deeply involved with the development of comics and graphic novels in India. His pioneering work "River of Stories" (Kalpavriksh 1994) is considered by many to be India's first graphic novel. He is a co-founder of the Pao Collective of graphic artists, and a key figure behind the award winning "Pao: The Anthology of Comics#1" (Penguin 2012).
Between 2009 and 2011, Orijit conceptualized—and led a team that executed—one of the world’s largest hand-painted murals, installed at the Virasat-e-Khalsa museum in Anandpur Sahib, Punjab. Orijit is Mario Miranda Chair visiting professor at Goa University, where he has initiated an experimental arts research project titled "Mapping Mapusa Market Project" involving students, educationists and artists.
