A refugee is a person who is outside his or her country of nationality and cannot return due to a well-founded fear of persecution because of his or her race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
Under international law, refugees are not allowed to be forced back to the countries they have fled. Developing countries host 80% of the world’s refugees. It is estimated that 50% of refugees are under the age of 18.
As of February 2015, Turkey is the biggest refugee hosting country which hosts 1.7 million Syrian refugees in the world. Pakistan is second, hosting 1.6 million Afghan refugees.
This theme of this year by UNHCR - the apex UN agency protecting rights of refugees is "With Courage Let Us All Combine" and this month, we have World Refugee Day on June 20th. Thus, keeping this spirit in mind and the emerging challenges of refugees, the focus of BOLD: New Delhi's event is to raise awareness to the struggle of modern day refugees, their stories and their collective and individual futures; and explore ways of making a difference in our own way/s.
