Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Seminar (‘Histories of Northeast India-New perspectives’ series) on ‘Winds of Change: Assam in the 18th century’ by Mr. Kuldeep Patowary, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Abstract:
The 18th century has been a dynamic one in history. The 18th century in the context of the Indian sub-continent has already been extensively studied with reference to the ‘decline of the Mughal Empire’, rise of other regional polities, and the subsequent expansion of ‘Company rule’ in India. However, though this larger debate on the 18th century serves us in forming a basic premise or background in the macro context of the sub-continent, yet when the Assam or the Brahmaputra Valley is looked at during the same period, we have to acknowledge the difference of experience. The tracing of 18th century through the above mentioned three phases fall short in contextualizing/juxtaposing Assam’s or the Ahom Kingdom’s own experiences with the different forces at play—the way Brahmaputra Valley was brought under one political authority, the internal uprisings and rebellions, external transgressions by the Burmese and the subsequent establishment of British rule in Assam. Whereas the 18th century for Northern India was a period of regional consolidation within an imperial crisis, in Assam this was a period of crises—social, political and economic. The asymmetric growth of power and influence of the monarchy vis-a-vis popular religiosity (in the form of neo Vaishnavism) is a major factor towards these crises, and as such, it necessitates a look into the 18th century in Assam and the re-interpretation of the historiographical position.

Speaker:
Mr. Kuldeep Patowary is an M.Phil Research Scholar (4th Semester) currently pursuing his research in the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University.  His research involves studying the polity and economy of Assam in the 18th and early 19th and to look into the changing nature of relations between the troika of ‘land, peasant, and nobility’ in the backdrop of 18th century turmoil in the Brahmaputra valley as well as the impact of the coming of the British in the early part of the 19th century.
