A Learning Journey Through Delhi
May / June 2015
This Summer, how about giving the chance to your child to become friends with their home...'Dilli'... the city where they live in?!
How about making your child fall in love with geography, geology and the fables of Delhi, helping them develop a sense of ownership and belonging to the city!
How about letting your child learn ways to develop an understanding of social, cultural and historical aspects of our rich heritage?
Delhi! Oh god! What a mess, crowds, traffic, pollution, garbage, unruly people, unsafe! Some of the adjectives we use for our home! OK, Delhi may be all this, but it is something much more! We are lucky to be living in one of the world’s greatest and oldest cities which has welcomed people from far and wide for more than a millennia now. The city is blessed with the one of India’s holiest rivers and part of one of the oldest mountains of the world. Can we ask for more!
Yes you can! You can explore and discover it. In all its flavors and moods.
But what if you could discover Delhi in a way not done before!
How would it be if you your child shared with you how s/he sees and experiences the city! And how to do that?
Here is how!
DelhiByFoot (DBF) is pleased to welcome young learners to the 3rd year of the unique Summer Vacation workshop, Kaafila-e-Dilli. We will take your child on a week long learning journey filled with the thrill of discovering hidden treasures of this great city, the joy of learning with friends and discovering something new within. A journey that will help your child to develop understanding of history versus just knowing historical facts, develop an ability to relate societal context to history and the ability to search for patterns within our culture that affect us today.
Kaafila-e-Dilli is an unique experience, different from others. Here the student is challenged to self-discover and make connections but in a manner that is relaxed yet exciting. S/he gets a chance be an journalist reporting from the field or an actor; maybe an artist or a photographer, or someone who thinks like an archaeologist or a researcher! In the process the participant understands concepts of environment, history, language, politics, geography, geology, culture heritage and that too organically, thereby gaining inter-disciplinary understanding and analytical skills. From themes that range from the ancient to the contemporary, guided by subject experts, who firmly believe in the simple philosophy that a ‘self-discovery’ triggers happiness and a happy mind loops back to a better focus on improved ‘analysis' and further self-discovery! We help your child develop skills that allow him/her to focus more when s/he learns through ‘sight, touch, hearing and emotionally connecting’, thus moving away from impersonal mediums like TV, mobile phones, gaming consoles and internet!
Kaafila-e-Dilli is a 7-day ride in a time capsule. The capsule travels thousands of years with each day bringing in passengers whom one doesn't get to meet often! Imagine meeting someone from the hill caves around Delhi or from the Indus Valley town of Mohenjo-daro, or meeting kings like Prithiviraj Chauhan and Illtutmish, saints like Nizamuddin Aulia, Mughal Emperor Shahjahan and a British Viceroy or two! The capsule has for its passengers a feast fit for an emperor and for entertainment it is storytelling, music and theater selected by the passenger!
The question is will your child be part of this Time Capsule?
Learning methodology: Equal mix of outdoor explorations and mapping of Delhi's geographical and historical sites alongwith indoor classroom sessions for documentation and presentations.
• PERFORMING ARTS: Role-plays, theatre and music
• VISUAL ARTS: Photography, craft-making, cartography(map-making) etc.
• LITERATURE: Creative writing, prose or poetry and oral story-telling techniques
