Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to the Weekly Seminar on ‘Towards an Ethnography of the Classroom’ by Prof. Kumkum Roy, NMML.
Abstract:
The classroom is a space that many of us take for granted as teachers. The speaker explores one somewhat unique classroom to suggest that both spatial contexts as well as the contents that are transacted are significant. The spatial organization of the classroom is shaped by both learners and teachers. Contents, on the other hand, are determined much more crucially by the latter, keeping in mind standardized requirements of academic achievement. This suggests that there is a space of creative conflict between context and content, which makes processes of learning complex. Innovative or imaginative interventions may require us to recognize these possibilities.
Speaker:
Prof. Kumkum Roy, currently a fellow at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, New Delhi, teaches ancient Indian history at the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She is interested in issues of gender, social and political institutions, and pedagogy.
