Event Description : "Tales from the Soul Marrow" Paintings and Drawings Exhibition by Vikash Kalra.
Self-trained artist Vikash Kalra is nothing if not utterly frank and explicitly honest about his art, as about himself and his goals in life.
Minus the straightjacket of institutional training, Vikash retains the natural fervour and intensity to paint and draw as he wishes, with no dearth of subjects, revelling every moment in the magic of life. With dedication and practice, Vikash is today poised on a pinnacle where angels of the art world verily fear to tread.
Vikash communicates in various ways. Sometimes he tells a story, and yet at others makes a proposition, or suggests a personal experiential truth. While his paintings are free, in powerful strokes, his drawings, a significant part of this show, are truths both bitter and sweet, informed by Vikash’s assessments and portrayal of human character, often imparting humans with animal heads. His surmises tend to be based on inner tendencies.
Looking at these drawings one may laugh, wonder, or even feel a tad alarmed at the constant stooping of human character, and the artist’s frank and spontaneous responses to them. There is acceptance in these responses, however, neither angst nor abhorrence in his playful seriousness.
We come finally to the questions of originality, and its paradigms within the field of fine art. Originality itself may be variously defined and understood. One cannot after all be willing to live on poison because others avoid it, or take to walking on one’s head where everyone else walks on their feet, all to prove a point in originality. What comes into being, found suitable and practical, is utilised as tools for specific purposes of life, becoming a part of the evolutionary purpose. Such it has been for centuries.
A languages may be liked and learnt; it is the content that makes creativity original or otherwise. So it is with Vikash, up and challenging the art world to look at his art with an open mind.
