Event Description : "Shaken not Stirred! James Bond in the Focus of Physics" Public Lecture by Prof. Dr. Metin Tolan, Technical University Dortmund, Germany
The lecture focuses on concepts of Physics behind James Bond movies and his adventures.

How can he catch a plane in the free fall as shown at the beginning of the movie Goldeneye? How likely is it that the magnetic watch from the movie "Live and Let Die" really works? These and similar questions in the life of top agents are answered in the lecture from a physical standpoint and garnished with film sequences. At the end of the lecture, the question is discussed why James Bond's vodka Martini has to be always shaken and is not allowed to be stirred!

Honoured for Innovative Science Communication in Physics, Prof. Tolan is the recipient of the Communicator’s Award 2013 conferred by German Research Foundation, DFG. The
“Communicator Award – Science Award of the Donors' Association” is endowed with 50,000 euros and is the most important prize for science communication awarded in Germany. Established in 2000, the award is bestowed on researchers who have communicated their own scientific findings and their research field to a wide general audience. By recognising outstanding science communicators, the DFG and the Donors' Association aim to promote the increasingly important dialogue between the scientific community and the public while promoting science communication within the research community itself.

Prof. Dr. Metin Tolan studied Physics and received his PhD degree in Experimental Physics

from Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel (Germany). After his Postdoc time in US, he did his habilitation form the University of Kiel and was later appointed Professor and Chair of Experimental Physics at TU Dortmund University in 2001. His main areas of interest are the use of X-rays to study the interface behaviour of polymers, biomaterials, liquids and other “soft materials” and the use of synchrotron radiation in materials research, for instance at the Dortmund Synchrotron Radiation Centre, which is home to the Delta electron storage
ring and of which he is the director. Amongst the various recognitions, in 2008 he won the TU Dortmund University research prize and in 2010 he was named Professor of the year for natural sciences and medicine by Unicum Beruf magazine. In 2008 he was appointed a prorector for his university, first for research and then in 2011 for teaching.
