Event Description : "Performability of CAGKAM Compositions" a talk by Nirmal Selvamony.

Though cagkam compositions are regarded as “literature,” they are, arguably, performable musical compositions. The presentation will dwell on these compositions, their performing practice and some basic conventions. The compositions belong to two basic domains, akam (the Inner) and puRam (the Outer). If the former domain was based on a master “home narrative,” the latter dealt with the various stages of combat, praise of patrons and transience of life. The presentation will bring out the dramatic nature of the Inner texts by dwelling on two things, emoting, and addressorial conventions. The ultimate values (on which the compositions were based) will also receive some attention. The next segment of the presentation will discuss the types of performers, dance/drama and music, and the musical modes. The (tiNai) musicological tradition of the pieces will be explained briefly and a musical demonstration will affirm the performability of these compositions.
