Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Public Lecture (in the ‘Cities in History’ series) on ‘Nehru’s Chandigarh’ by Prof. K. T. Ravindran, RICS School of Built Environment, Amity University, Noida.

Abstract:
Jawaharlal Nehru’s ideological inclinations defined much of Modern India’s city building and architectural content in post independent India. His brand of democracy found an ideal ally in the early Modern Movement in architecture, based on rationalism and anti-fascist positioning. Le Corbusier epitomised these European Modernist value frames. His interventions in Chandigarh represent a European democratic world view modulated with symbolism embedded in a neo Orientalist conception of an ideal Indian city. The architecture that embellished this city, were direct derivatives of the Nehruvian dream for Modern India.  In hindsight, the historic processes and aesthetic expressions which were at play in Chandigarh reveal themselves and present a prophetic spectre of the multiple fractures in today’s Indian polity.

Speaker:
Prof K.T. Ravindran is at present the Dean Emeritus at the RICS School of Built Environment-Amity University, Noida. Former Dean and Head of Urban Design at the School of Planning and Architecture of New Delhi, his work focused on the development of Indian cities, and more specifically on the inclusion and conservation of heritage buildings in modern urban spaces. He is the Founder and former President of the Institute of Urban Designers – India, and former Chairman of the Delhi Urban Art Commission.
