Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Public Lecture (in the ‘Regional History and Culture’ series) on ‘Changing Representations : Kerala in Brahmanical, Islamic and Portuguese perceptions’ by Prof. Kesavan Veluthat, University of Delhi, Delhi.

Abstract:
The lecture is an attempt to see the way in which the identity of Kerala was articulated in different discourses in the medieval period. It is argued that the identity of the territory was one that it had acquired only by the turn of the second millennium of the Common Era. Taken up for discussion are a Brahmanical narrative, the Keralotpatti, an Islamic text, the Tuhafat-ul-Mujahiddin and the Portuguese account, the Book of Duarte Barbosa. It is shown that a different image of Kerala is projected in each of these, notwithstanding the identity of the geographical boundaries. It is suggested that the variations are a function of the interests of the authors of these and that an ‘objective reality’ is hard to come by in any of these accounts.

Speaker:
Professor Kesavan Veluthat taught in different Government Colleges in Kerala for six years, before joining the newly established Mangalore University in 1981 and later the University of Delhi in 2009. His publications include The Early Medieval in South India,The Political Structure of South India and Brahman Settlements in Kerala, an edition of a Latin-Malayalam-Latin Dictionary and a translation of a Sanskrit kāvya, the Mahiṣaśataka of Vancheśvara Dīkṣita.
