Event Description : "Are Artists Generalists or Specialists?" a talk by Sumantra Sengupta and Laura Letinsky.

Laura Letinsky is currently Professor at the University of Chicago, Department of Visual Arts. Her recent exhibitions include the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, The Photographers Gallery, London, and Denver Art Museum, CO.  Previous shows include the Getty Museum, LA; Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography; Casino Luxembourg; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and The Renaissance Society, Chicago. Collections include the Art Institute of Chicago; J.P. Getty Museum, Los Angeles; Musee de Beaux-Arts, Montreal, QUE; Museum of Fine Art, Houston, TX; and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Yancey Richardson Gallery, New York represents her.  Her grants and awards include the Canada Council, Anonymous Was a Woman Foundation, and the Guggenheim Fellowship.  Her publications include Ill Form and Void Full (Radius Press, 2014), Feast (Smart Museum of Art, UC Press, 2013), After All (Damiani, 2010), Hardly More Than Ever (Renaissance Society, 2004), Blink (Phaidon Press, 2002), and Venus Inferred (University of Chicago Press, 2000).

Sumantra Sengupta is currently Professor and Head, Department of Art Design and Performing Arts, School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Shiv Nadar University since July 2012. Prior to this position from 2008-2012 he worked as a fulltime artist and also visiting faculty and jury member at NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology) in Mumbai and Bangalore. He was also visiting Faculty at Raffle Design (a Singapore Design college) in Mumbai.  He has created specific murals and installations at British Council in New Delhi (2002); IIT Kanpur (2000) and as well designed a public art piece 200 feet by 12 feet for the public procession on the first death anniversary of Safdar Hashmi. Professor Sengupta practice Hindusthani classical vocal music and experiments with voice. He has also collaborated in several theatre production and set designing with renowned theatre personalities.  His awards and accolades include the Governor of West Bengal Award for best painting for annual exhibition in Government College of Art and Crafts, Kolkata (1980); best painting, annual show, Government College of Art and Crafts, Kolkata (1979); and he represented India in Triennial of India in New Delhi (1992).
