Event Description : “And Still I Rise” A gender re-education programme using art and the written word.

An exhibition and a series of 10 workshops will be organised, designed and delivered in which upto 20 teenage girls will be encouraged to write letters about their aspirations. The Exhibition will showcase a collection that will focus on a hopeful determination to rise above difficulty and discouragement. This is a central theme of the exhibition and education programme, which aims to provide hope against stereotyping by raising awareness of gender discrimination and the impact of gender stereotyping on limiting opportunities for women worldwide. The letters written by the teenage girls will be in line with the aims of the exhibition and lead up to creating a bank of 200 letters.

The voices of the future the voices of young women often marginalised in society reach out to us to express their hopes and fears and to shed light on a possible future they dream of. The Exhibition of these voices is showcased through young women now empowered by their pen and their vocal reaches, to express their visions and dreams across geographical distances.
The Exhibition will feature the writings of young women in India and from around the world and bring together the similarities and differences; the hopes and dreams; the ambitions; with focus on the evolving role of the woman in the future. As an adjunct, complimentary dimension, the works of a number of artists shall be exhibited to compliment the written words of the girls. The artworks reinforce the power of the written word across languages and cultural realms, and the inherent energy of art to transform beings and enrich their lives.

The initiative is supported by Aditi Rao Hydari, Bharti Kher, Dia Mirza, Konkana Sen Sharma, Namrata Joshipura, Nishat Fatima, Priya Paul, Riddhima Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, Sonalika Sahay, Sonam Kalra and  Vidushi Mehra among others.
