Event Description : The Unseen Documentaries: Shinsuke Ogawa – Documentary Film Screenings.
Shinsuke Ogawa, a tallest figure over the landscape of Japanese documentary, began his film career in 1960 by making public-relations films, but soon left this lucrative career to devote himself to the production of independent documentaries. Over the next ten years, he produced a series of seven films documenting the political struggle against the Japanese government, which was attempting to evict local farmers from land on which they had lived and worked for generations in order to build a new Tokyo International Airport at Narita. He won the Directors Guild of Japan New Directors Award for Summer in Narita in 1970.
Magino Village proved to be Ogawa’s last completed production. These films became the epitome of Ogawa’s stance towards documentary. He was influential in the creation of the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival, where the top prize in the Asia program was named after him.
