Event Description : "Performing The Nation" Lecture by Dr. Ananda Breed.

Beneath the outstretched branches of the giant umunyinya tree in Rwanda, a dance begins. 
Then the dancing subsides and the gacaca court, the community hearings on the one hundred days of  bloodshed—the Rwandan Genocide—is called into session. This is the ongoing process of reconciliation 20 years after the brutal, orchestrated murder of almost one million people in Rwanda.

But this scene raises questions: How can court testimony be used to rebuild a cohesive national identity for the Hutu and Tutsi? And how do dance and theatre move forward the cause of justice and reconciliation? By documenting the discourse and actions of the gacaca court and exploring the use of performance, Performing the Nation provides a satisfying analysis of the interplay among justice, performance, narrative and memorialization.

DR ANANDA BREED is Reader, School of Arts & Digital Industries, University of East London. She has worked as a consultant for IREX and UNICEF in Kyrgyzstan on issues concerning confl ict negotiation and conducted workshops in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Indonesia, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Palestine, Rwanda and Turkey. She is Co-director, Centre for Performing Arts Development (CPAD), University of East London and former research fellow of the International Research Centre ‘Interweaving Performance Cultures’ (2013–2014) at Freie Universität Berlin, Germany.
