Event Description : The Portret Project presents A walk through the recent works of Hugo Bonamin.

The Portret Project invites you to a conversation between artist, Hugo Bonamin and critic and curator, Anirudh Chari followed by a walk through and exclusive preview of Hugo’s work to be shown at the India Art Fair at the end of January.

Hugo’s current body of work engages with the history of post-independence India and is an exciting and challenging look at both traditional and conceptual notions of image making.

Anirudh is an art critic and curator whose interests include portraiture and nationalism in the visual arts.

About Our Team : Sakhshi Mahajan, Founder/Director of TPP
Sakhshi Mahajan graduated from The University of Chicago with major in Economics and a minor in Art History. Sakhshi has worked at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Gagosian Gallery in Philadelphia and New York City respectively. She returned to New Delhi, India in 2012 and worked as an independent curator and art promoter before conceptualizing, The Portret Project. TPP is a niche gallery that focuses on portraiture as an art form and its transformation over time.

Anirudh Chari, Curatorial Director of TPP
Anirudh Chari is an independent curator, critic and writer. He is a regular contributor to various journals and periodicals on the visual arts and lectures widely on aspects of modern and contemporary Indian art. He has curated several exhibitions of Indian, sub-continental and Asian art and his curatorial interests include portraiture, contemporary printmaking practices and national identity in the visual arts.

Hugo Bonamin, Artist
Hugo Bonamin was born in Paris in 1979 to a Swiss mother and Argentine father, both of them architects. He produced his first significant painting at the age of four. During his school years he also attended the Atelier Nicolas Poussin and took courses at the Ecole du Louvre. At the age of fifteen he met an anatomist and doctor, who initiated him into the realities and riches of the human body. He was fascinated. Since 1999, this self-taught painter has taken part in over thirty shows, in Paris, Buenos Aires, Switzerland and India. Hugo has developed a very personal approach to art; his portraits aim to portray another existence through blurring and distortion.

About The Portret Project :
The Portret Project was founded in 2013 in New Delhi. It is a niche art gallery concept that focuses on portraiture as an art form and with an emphasis on its radical role in the history of art and its growth and development.

Portraiture as a medium for artistic expression has been largely forgotten and in the same breath there are no preferred sensibilities or anything dictating how a contemporary portrait should look.

It is a highly revealing exercise. Whether representing the face of the artist or another, the fundamental idea of a good portrait is to draw in the viewer and inform him or her of the subject’s essence, identity and existence.

While each show will be a unique illustration and attempt to interpret portraiture it will also reiterate the amorphous state of art today. Artists – both traditional and conceptual – continue to plumb the infinite richness and variety of the genre for new means of expression and have been rewarded with a renewal of critical, curatorial and commercial interest.
