Event Description : "Return to the Future - a Journey through five decades with Kathak" by veteran Kahtak exponent Padmashri Pratap Pawar as part of the 'Mangal Sabha' series.

About Pratap Pawar :
Padmashri Pratap Pawar started his Kathak journey well over five decades ago as a student of Pandit Birju Maharaj in Bharatiya Kala Kendra at Pusa Road, New Delhi. Those were the early days of the transition of the art form from an ancient Parampara dependent on Royal patronage, to institutionalization of the ancient artistic traditions. Pratap Pawar was part of the first "Production Unit" when Kathak Kendra was carved out in 1964. The first "Gandaabandh Shishya" of Pandit Birju Maharaj, Pratapji remained by the side of his master for several years performing in his major stage productions as well as a solo artist all over the nation. He left for Guyana in 1972 as a Kathak Guru in one of the lndian Culture centres established abroad.

For the next several decades Pratapji taught, created and performed worldwide which included many years in Trinidad and over thirty years in the UK. He is known as one of the pioneers and cultural ambassadors of lndian classical Dance in the UK and Europe today. As he nurtured generations of Kathak artistes in Europe, which also includes star dancer and choreographer Akram Khan, he stayed connected with his Guru and the evolution of the classical art scene in lndia.
