Event Description : "Critical Juncture - Against the current" A conversation between Magda Fabiańczyk, Tushar Joag, Alicja Rogalska and Sharmila Samant.
Critical Juncture is a Polish-Indian exhibition, that is currently talking place in Kerala as a collateral event of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale. Curated by Neelima Jeychandran and Magda Fabiańczyk, and presenting work of six Indian and six Polish artists, the exhibition brings together a collection of artistic responses to contemporary political and social issues in the state of Kerala, India and Poland - two geographically remote territories that have both been influenced by different notions and practices of communism.
Along with creating a space for critical thinking and exchange, Critical Juncture’s genuine engagement with the local community of Kochi proposes a model of exhibition, where artists work with residents and support local workers and workers' unions. The invited artists represent different generations, levels of recognition and social backgrounds and include both internationally and locally acclaimed artists. The project is partly artist-led, which sets a base for a collaborative approach and provides an alternative to the established hierarchies of the art world.
Magda Fabiańczyk in conversation with Tushar Joag, Alicja Rogalska and Sharmila Samant, some of the the artists taking part in the exhibition, will present the concept and process of developing the project.
About the participants :
Magda Fabiańczyk (born 1980) is a Polish artist and curator based in London. She creates multi-layered participatory projects, challenging concepts of difference at the centre of conflict. She studied at Byam Shaw, Central St Martins College of Art and Design and the University of Economics in Katowice. Working as a narrative mediator, she introduced mediation process into her practice. From 2009 - 2010, she developed EU funded film projects in India working with West Bengali folk artists, as part of Transition Collective, resulting in exhibitions at ICCR and Akar Prakar Gallery, Kolkata. In 2013 she co-edited 'We were trying to make sense…' a publication focusing on the ethics of collaboration in socially-engaged art practices and curated an exhibition under the same title at 1 Shanthiroad, Bangalore, India. Recent projects and residencies include Eye Contemporary Art Ghana (2014); Kronika Centre for the Contemporary Art, Bytom, Poland; Rewiry Cultural Centre, Lublin, Poland; 1 Shanthiroad, Bangalore, India; AIR at Central St Martins, London (all 2013); VASL - Triangle Arts Trust's Network, Pakistan (2012); the C. Rockefeller Centre for Contemporary Arts, Dresden, Germany (2012), and Folkestone Fringe, UK (2011).
Alicja Rogalska (born 1979) is an artist based in London and Warsaw. Her practice is interdisciplinary and encompasses both research and production with a focus on social structures and the political subtext of the everyday. She mostly works in context on projects that involve collaboration with others and creating social situations. She graduated with an MFA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College, University of London (2011) and an MA in Cultural Studies from the University of Warsaw (2006). Recent exhibitions and projects include:Reap, Glean, Garner residency at The National University of Colombia (Bogota, 2014); Your City of a Battleground, Museum of Modern Art (Warsaw, 2014), A Museum of Immortality, Ashkal Alwan (Beirut, 2014); Avantgarde and Socialist Realism, Muzeum Sztuki (Lodz, 2014); Tear Dealer, Rewiry (Lublin, 2014);IMS, Flat Time House (London, 2013); Melancholy In Progress, Hong-Gah Museum (Taipei, 2012); To Look is to Labour, Laden Für Nichts (Leipzig, 2010) and No Soul For Sale, Tate Modern (London, 2010).
Sharmila Samant (born 1967) lives and works in Mumbai. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Sir J.J. School of Fine Arts, and from LS Raheja College of Architecture. She is active in the Mumbai arts scene as a founder of the Open Circle artist initiative. She has been selected for important international artists residencies: Gasworks, London in 2001 and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam 1998-00. Her installations and video works deal with issues of identity within a global context and have been included in many major international exhibitions including the influential Century City at Tate Modern, Art & Public in Geneva, Larkeeren Gallery in Mumbai, Neues Problem in Berlin, Contemporary Art Centre (CAC) in Vilnius, Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa in Venice, Certificates of Authenticity in Art in Middelburg, Zacheta - National Gallery of Art in Warsaw, Experimenter in Kolkata, National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey MARCO, Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery and Werkleitz Biennale.
Tushar Joag (born 1966) is an Indian artist and educator currently living and working in New Delhi. He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Art, Design and Performing Art in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Shiv Nadar University. Joag employs art as a tool for social transformation and most of his projects aim to provide discursive platforms for addressing contemporary urban issues. He is a co-founder of the Mumbai-based artist collective Open Circle engaging with contemporary socio-political issues. He had conducted a series of workshops and interventions in support of the Narmada Bacchao Andolan, a people's movement against the environmental impacts of Sardar Sarovar - a mega dam project, which resulted in the displacement of underprivileged communities from the area. He holds a Masters in Sculpture from M. S. U Baroda (1990) and an undergraduate degree in Sculpture from Sir J. J. School of Arts (1988). He was a resident fellow at Rijksakademie in Amsterdam (1998-2000). He has exhibited in leading Indian and international galleries and institutions and is the founder of UNICELL, a mock corporate enterprise
