Event Description : Cineaste' presents "Picnic on the Battlefield & Hawalaat" Hindi comedy play.
Picnic on the Battlefield is indeed absurd. During an unannounced visit; parents arrived on the battlefield to cheer up their despondent son with a picnic. As the bombs continue to fall around them, the family accidentally captures an enemy soldier! The play is engrossed with subtle humour in tragic plot & continuously shifts in mood and atmosphere, creating a certain chaos which also makes the play distinguish itself from the traditional plot.
Hawalaat is a satire on the establishment. The story revolves around three youth who have no place to live in the coldest night of winter, without food and shelter. The story proceeds with a meeting with policeman which leads into an interrogation session which reveals how every position holder of this nation has been befooling the system since independence.
Director : Devesh Nigam
Devesh Nigam completed his engineering from Delhi College of Engineering (presently DTU) after which he decided to switch gears and follow his heart. After learning nuance by working in association with eminent theatre personalities, he established his own unique theatre group Cineaste’, for which he writes & directs plays & short films. So far he has written 4 plays & Directed more than 15 productions and has received critical acclaims for his work which includes Kafan ( Munshi Premchand), Death of a Govt Clerk(Anton Chekhov), Happy B’day (based on Gandhi ji’s Talisman), Moteram Ka Satyagrah (Safdar Hashmi & Habeev Tanveer), Hawalaat (Sarveshwar Dayal Sexena), Bahut Bada Sawal (Mohan Rakesh), Snow White & Seven Dwarves, Addiction, 5 Kahaniyan, Ghadbadjhala, Between The Lines, Death On Stage (Devesh Nigam), among others.
He is also a skilled actor trainer (professional acting) and conducted many theatre workshops and session in various Colleges, Institution, NGO’s & Schools in Delhi. Apart from regular theatre activities he is also an independent short film maker. His earlier works includes experimental & thought provoking short movies like Beti, U-turn, Talab. He believes that playwrights should respond to their urban realities while willing to experimental with style & narrative.
