Event Description : An exhibition of interiors from Bali by Ritu Vij and Monica Modak.
“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.”
- Albert Einstein
Kayu (meaning wood) brings to the capital’s living spaces the mysterious beauty nestled in the interiors of exotic Bali, a beautiful range of furniture in wood, metal and stone, that qualify as ‘artefacts’ and unusual home decor objets d’art, aesthetically appealing to a soul born out of passion for rustic chic. In its charming renditions, Kayu brings to India the warmth of wood, stone and natural textures, coupled with unique and inspiring designs. Launched in India in November 2013, brain child of Ritu Vij and Monica Modak, the simple, uncluttered yet rich, one-of-a-kind Kayu pieces capture the aesthetic soul of Indonesian artisans and celebrate design, art and culture.
The Kayu philosophy intrinsically believes in interiors that are simple, clean and uncluttered, but include richness and warmth in a unique range of tables, chairs, consoles and decorative items, in a price range of Rs.5,000/- to Rs.1,75,000/-.
Says Ritu Vij, “Keeping this fundamental consideration in mind, most of our furniture enjoys straight lines, with modern finishes and neutral colors, with a warmth, that only natural wood can exude.”
Ritu had the opportunity of allowing her senses to absorb and adopt the mysterious nuances of furniture forms and textures, from a diverse range of cultures – ancient and modern, rustic and modular, which allowed her to create her own design vocabulary in her personal living space. The constant move from country to country, urged her to create elements of living space that incorporated a variety of materials and textures in an environment that combined chic and comfort.
Monica Modak, from Colombia, South America earned a degree in Architecture from the University of Notre Dame, USA. Always artistic and highly creative, Monica’s early career in architecture focused on designing high-end residential complexes in Florida. But due to frequent family relocation across the Asia Pacific region, architecture made way for creative interior projects. In India, she designed offices for several multinational companies based in Delhi. Noticing a lack of available modern furniture in India, she designed and produced her own high-end products. But it was during a five year stint in Indonesia that she came to realise the abundance and rich quality of materials and fine workmanship of the Indonesian artisan.
Says Monica: “Living and working in Indonesia, I developed a deep appreciation for the country's furniture design and creative use of materials. My somewhat cold minimalism yielded to a warmer organic design ethos based on an amalgam of wood, stone and other natural materials used so beautifully by Indonesian artisans. I developed a love for natural, organic looking spaces, minimalistic in colour and form but rich in textures.”
Kayu’s creations, carefully curated on the islands of Bali and Java, combine modern sensibility, rustic chic and marvelous materials to make ‘home’ a very special place.
