We just can't wait to get our funny bone tickled for none other than Dan Nainan is coming to G-town! Dan, who has set a new benchmark for stand-up comedy every time he went on stage, is performing live on December 13, 2014 at the CXO evening to be held at Trident, Gurgaon, as the hotel marks 10 years of excellence in hospitality.
Clean, profanity-free comedy is Dan’s USP and it has gained him so much popularity that he has been invited to events where the likes of President Obama have been guests. Now, that is no mean feat in itself. Excitement is writ large in his voice as he recounts the experience of performing in front of Mr Obama. “He absolutely loved it. I was watching him out of the corner of my eye, and he was throwing his head back and roaring at my jokes. That was the ultimate thrill of a lifetime. When I met him afterwards, he said, "Dan is f-ing hilarious."
Curious to know how this Indo-Japanese guy ended from being a techie at Intel to the stage, we asked him about his incredible journey. “My technical job involved speaking on stage with the CEO and other senior executives. These events would happen all over the world. The executive would bring me on stage to demonstrate the latest technology. However, it was terrifying to speak on stage in front of thousands of people. I had to do something to get over the fear, so I took a comedy class. I figured if I could do comedy, presenting on stage at corporate events would become easier, and that turned out to be the case”.
We hear Dan’s impression of Bill Clinton is so bang on that even many celebrities have fallen for his pranks. “In my spare time, I've been calling up famous people pretending to be Clinton. I start the call by saying in a very deep voice "This is the office of President Bill Clinton - I have Mr. Clinton on the line for (name of person)". I've gotten through to some amazing people, including Donald Trump, former New York Governor David Paterson, Larry King, as well as a few senators and representatives”.
Keeping the act free of profanity is one risk that Dan took, and it worked. What make him take the decision? “I met Jerry Seinfeld at a comedy club very early in my career. I was terrified to even speak with him, but I asked him if he had any advice for me. He suggested that I work clean because I could work in many more venues. This has definitely turned out to be the case. 99 percent of my shows require a clean comedian and would never tolerate dirty material. Also, my Asian parents would kill me if they knew I was doing profanity on stage”.
Dan has come a long way from his 2003 appearance in NBC's Last Comic Standing, advancing as far as the West Coast Semi-finals. He has performed in several countries on four continents. So, which performance has been the highlight of his career? “As a nerd, I'd have to say that meeting Steve Wozniak has definitely been the highlight. He saw me perform and gave me the most amazing and heartfelt testimonial. He said something that really touched me: he said that when you're a nerd and an outcast in school and you aren't invited to socialize and hang out with the popular crowd, you have a lot of time on your hands. He said he used that time to build circuits, and of course he went on to invent the Apple computer and start Apple with Steve Jobs”.
And which performance has been his favourite? “I would have to say performing in Times Square for 50,000 people last year was my all-time favorite performance. It was amazing. An incredible feeling and of course something I'd love to do again”.
