Event Description : "Jantar Mantar" a solo exhibition of Artworks by Nilofer Suleman.

In association with Art Musings and Project Artworm

The first encounter with Nilofer Suleman’s paintings is an exchange between the artist and the viewer. No words are spoken. Instead, a request is made and accepted. This agreement asks the viewer to suspend her disbelief, to enter into the realm of representation, to follow its internal logic and codes. The invitation to accept this illusion, to engage with it and follow where it leads, is a psychic leap, one that subtly alters our way of seeing. For the viewer, then, the painting is activated, and its rich narrative becomes apparent.
Suleman is known for her ability to depict a certain vision of India, one that elicits humor and a sense of nostalgia. Her use of color is generous, an onslaught of competing tones. The paintings are difficult to see all at once. They require repeated viewing, a return in search of nuance. Within the compositions, references are made to popular pictures of Hindu deities, to film posters and shop signs. These are decorated with detail, peopled with famous idols of religion or popular culture – though the line between these is often unclear. In fact, this blurriness, a close knitting between the layers of imagery, is crucial to Suleman’s compositional strategy. The images within her images move beyond their delineations, carrying their own weight and irony, drawing notice to the representational nature of the works while playing with its limitations. Are these pictures within the paintings merely objects, or do they become characters in their own right? What is the image and what is representation – how do these distinctions of distance dissolve under closer inspection? In his book on the history and potential of printmaking in India, Christopher Pinney confesses the core of his thesis: “This is what I have struggled to achieve here: not a history of art, but a history made by art.” Suleman considers this idea of art as active, of the possibility for art objects to compel shifts.
