Event Description : An exhibition of Old and New Prints by Vijay Kumar.

Vijay Kumar will be exhibiting etchings made over his career as a printmaker.  His prints incorporate diverse etching techniques and a wide range of subject matter.  Some prints are whimsical, others quite serious.  Some etchings reflect his interest in alphabets and writing, though none of these can be read. One series is based on images of horses.  Other etchings are imaginary cityscapes, some of which explore the intersection of geometry and the urban landscape. Still other etchings comment on modern life and the human condition.

About :
Vijay Kumar was born in Lahore (then part of India) and studied art at Triveni Kala Sangam in New Delhi. Drawing has always been his major interest. After leaving India, he studied fresco restoration at Studenica Monestary in Yugoslavia, and then travelled and had one-man shows in the Middle East and in Europe. After coming to the U.S., he learned printmaking (etching), first at Pennsylvania State University and then at Pratt Graphics Center in NYC. Vijay is a founding member of the Manhattan Graphics Center, where he teaches etching. He also teaches printmaking at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Norwalk (CT) and at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey in Summit. Vijay has exhibited his etchings, drawings and paintings throughout the U.S. and abroad, and has won awards for his work. His work is in permanent collections including: The New York Public Library, The Museum of Modern Art, the New-York Historical Society, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York City; the U.S. Library of Congress in Washington, DC; the William Benton Museum of Art in Storrs, Connecticut; the Frank Museum of Art at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio; the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England; and the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Alkazi Collection in New Delhi. Vijay is the curator for the Indo-American Arts Council’s annual Erasing Borders Exhibition of Contemporary Indian Art of the Diaspora. He has also curated print shows for Manhattan Graphics Center and for the Frank Museum of Art at Otterbein University; organized a print exhibition for the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers at The British Council in New Delhi; and co-curated two large exhibitions in India of work by Indian and American printmakers.
