Event Description : "We do not see things the way they are, we see things the way we are" a solo show of Artworks by Avinash Veeraraghavan.

The exhibition title, appropriated from a text by Anaïs Nin, articulates the heterogeneous nature of subjectivity. Tracing and building on both formal and autobiographical developments in the artist’s life, Veeraraghavan’s complex visual collages use hybrid references, layering, and repetition to evoke multiple patterns of perception.

Shifting the understanding of signification, the self and the whole, Veeraraghavan cites the notion of fragmentation as the predominant condition of our times. The embroidered New Moon and laser cut Cradle elicit the experience of feeling like the ground below you has given way, referring to an intellectual collapse of past structures, ideas and self-image. Two boats at the end of their lifecycle, Ark and Sinker, represent structures redundant of past function, alluding to entropy or abandonment of grand narratives. A series of interlaced images of masks result in ambiguities of signification. Commenting on the hybrid nature of personas, fragmentation in this case offers the possibility for conflicting dichotomies to co-exist.

Veeraraghavan’s three maps Ithri Folami, Elorio, and N.E Dara are maps of the psyche. These fictional maps are conceived as metaphors of the places his mind has seen. Subscribing to the idea of a collective unconscious, the artist fills his maps with symbols that elicit memories and free association. Using an instinctual and visual approach to choosing the signs he embeds in his work, he works with archives of vast quantities of visual data he has collected over the years. He approaches the process as a playful operation in which references oscillate between autobiographical images, canons of art history, and popular culture. Dissolving dichotomies of hi-low, east-west, classical-modern, the imagery demands equal attention on the visual plane. Resulting in a collapse of hierarchy in content, Veeraraghavan critiques power structures inherent in map making.

Navigating the idea fragmentation through collapse and deconstruction of pre-existing structures, the works turn towards a positive embrace of hybridity and pastiche. Through the materiality and liberated signification of We do not see things the way they are, we see things the way we are, Veeraraghavan expresses “delight in the coming together of difference.”

Avinash Veeraraghavan’s recent solo presentations include an exhibition at the Tilton Gallery, New York (2013), Crazy Jane and Jack the journey man at Galerie Krinzinger, Vienna (2011) and Toy Story, GALLERYSKE, Bangalore (2009). His work has featured in traveling exhibition Indian Highway which was presented at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2012), Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, Denmark (2010) and Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo (2009). His group exhibitions include the Prague Biennale (2011), Urban Manners 2, curated by Adelina Von Furstenberg, Art for The World at SESC Pompeia, Sao Paulo (2010) and Still Moving Image, curated by Deeksha Nath at Devi Art Foundation, New Delhi (2008).
