Event Description : "The Chair City" an exhibition of recent works by Alka Jhamb.
Alka Jhamb, in her latest series of works that include paintings, drawings and sculptures made out of improvised furniture and found objects, has extracted human presence to its abstract minimum, leaving the feeling, ‘someone was here’ for the viewers. The colours that Alka Jhamb uses to create her paintings are not stark. They are subdued and more or less show the subtle tonal variations of grey, white, brown and black.
In many of her works, Alka Jhamb deconstructs the chairs as small specks of existence in a larger universe. They look like individuals looking for their separate existence within a larger society.
These works of Alka Jhamb are the reflections on her surroundings, the life styles, aspirations, anxieties and power games that she sees in a day to day life. She infuses a sort of human spirit into all these images though they are devoid of any obvious human presence.
