Event Description : "Rappaccini’s Daughter" a Spanish play by Octavio Paz as part of V Anniversary of Instituto Cervantes in New Delhi.
Synopsis : In This drama “La hija de Rappaccini” (1953) Octavio Paz recreates Hawthorne’s tale “Rappaccini’s daughter” (1844). While Hawthorne, whose story is rooted in the Crhistian allegorical tradition of Dante, Spencer and Milton, contrasts love with “poisonous” sex, faith with imperfect knowledge, Paz rejects Christian dualisim; the central theme of his play, which is influenced by Buddhist ideas, hermetic tradition, Aztec mythology and surrealism, is the ardent quest of a lost unity, the individual’s effort to space from the prision of self. For Paz, the poison with which Rappaccini has imbued his daughter does not symbolize carnal sin –as in Hawthorne- but rather the mutual alienation of woman and man. And whereas Hawthorne’s Beatrice is ultimately to be healed in Paradise, Paz leaves us uncertain as to whether Beatrice will attain the desired “other shore”, whether after death “we truly return to that which we are”.
