Event Description : Jazz Utsav 2014.

“Every year we try to bring in bands to the festival who represent genres that will appeal to different age groups in the audience. Some like trad jazz, others prefer electronica. And so it is our attempt to bring groups that will showcase how diverse jazz is,” says Soli Sorabjee, President of Capital Jazz. 

Pianists have had a renaissance at this year’s festival, the David Hazeltine Trio from the USA is one of the headline acts. One of the world’s leading improvisers on the trombone, Steve Davis, brings his quartet. This year Spain is represented at the Utsav for the first time with the Diego Amador Trio, that blends flamenco 
music with post-bop and avant-garde jazz. 

The Dutch group Deborah J Carter quartet plays what they call Metropolitan Jazz. “It is music from a 21st century city where one can go to a Latin club on a Saturday night, cross the street to an r&b/jazz club, and then go a block over and experience some other kind of music,” says Deborah J. Carter. 

Saxophonist Francesco Cafiso was a child prodigy. His sound has been described by JazzTimes Writer Thomas Conrad as a “gigantic, brilliant, wake-the-dead cry, and his fluency in hardcore bop proved how it is an ageless form of communication.”

The sound of the Berlin-based guitarist Arne Jansen is a fiery exploration of the rich range of the electric guitar, in which gentle understatement is constantly fused with playful decadence.
