A Journey Across Dualities.
Comments by Gilles Chuyen : What is dance?
I am not here to give you the right answer. Through this show, I want to share with you twenty years of my experiences in India, during which I have been asking this very question again and again. Hooked on to the message of oneness in the Upanishads as a budding scholar, my being was asking for more.
The black and white box of my western mind gradually opened up to the rainbow hues of my Self, through the most enriching journey of creativity and self discovery. For me, dance has always been indeed the medium, par excellence for self exploration. Like in a cooking class, I started with simple recipes and bland dishes using dialogues of form, rhythm and concepts to gradually bringing in the flavours and aromas of colour, emotion, elements and memories.
What dance is to me is very much connected to the question of who I am.
When I dance, not only is my body at work, but all layers of my Self.
On this journey, I kept facing the many dualities our human condition possesses; the inner and the outer, the Princess and the Monk, the Sufi and the Clown, among others.
Taking from the various experiences, memories and performances of my twenty years in India, "What is dance?" is a platform I am offering you to have a look at your own journey and reflect on its complex depth and beauty.
Produced, designed and directed by Gilles Chuyen
Gilles Chuyen is a professional dancer, actor, choreographer and director. He has been trained in France in folk, jazz, ballet and contemporary dance styles, as well as in various partner dancing vocabularies. Based in India since 1994, he completed a Ph.D. on political identities in the caste system, after which he decided to focus on cultural identities in the performing arts. Combining Indian theatre and dance traditions with contemporary perspectives, he is involved in finding the deeper meaning of life and healing through movement.
Gilles believes that dance forms are for a choreographer what colours on the palette are for a painter. From ballet to Bollywood and contemporary to Chhau, Gilles has been performing, teaching, choreographing and exploring movement for the last two decades all over India and across the five continents.
After years of experimentation on the relationship between movement and energy, guided by the Karmic Research Centre, New Delhi, he created his own dance company, In Step, which presented Colours in 2007, Prakriti in 2009, Bija in 2011, Devotions and Dharma in 2012. The next year, he developed a workshop for dancers, actors and singers which focused on seven steps to understand movement and true self expression. This workshop was connected to a book to be published titled “What is Dance?”. To celebrate his 20 years in India, he is now all geared up to share the same through the present performance.
In Step is a dance company which aims to reconnect with the essence of dance. Human beings have forgotten the true meaning and power of dance. Dance is far more than just form, dance is about the energy flowing into the various layers of human life, not only physical, but also mental, emotional and more over, spiritual.
India has a role to play to revive this connection, through colourful dances of heart and soul, far from grey concepts of the mind. Dance has a tremendous potential of connecting; connecting people to their true self and connecting audiences to higher vibrations. The physical body can indeed be a temple for experimentation; a divine laboratory to find the sacred space within, making dance the true bridge to the soul.
The company works at providing platforms (performances, movement classes, dance meditation workshops) for everyone (children from all backgrounds, dancers and professionals) to tap into their full potential, to dance their life in harmony, in step with the universe.
