Event Description : Dani Pannullo Dance Theatre Co. presents "Soul Pait" Dance Performance.

Synopsis : The modern adventurer Dani Pannullo travelled in 2013 to Trivandrum, the capital of state of Kerala in southern India. For years he has been fascinated by the age-old regional fight form Kalaripayattu, known to experts as the mother of all martial arts. Common practice for the company run by Pannullo in Madrid (Spain) is to study carefully the different dance forms at the root of their performances. The preferred language of this director has always been urban contemporary dance. Although this style of dance came into being in the metropolitan areas, it has been influenced by martial arts since its very beginning. Therefore, Pannullo’s search for inspiration has taken him in this occasion to
India, and not China or Japan, as could otherwise have been presumed. The experience of the Spanish dancers living in Kerala and working together with the young Indian Kalaripayattu fighters would, according to the firm conviction of this director, inevitably strengthen cultural ties between both countries and stimulate further artistic creations in the future. Ever since Dani Pannullo learned of their origins and masters, it has been at the core of the project for the Madrid-based company to present these ancient ritual dance and combat forms in their own contemporary language to audiences across Europe and Asia.
After travelling by train and rickshaw from Malappuram in the north to Trivandrum in the south in an intense search through different villages and countless “kalaris” (kalaripayattu schools), Dani Pannullo finally found the dancers he was craving for so long to make his dream come true. When integrated into his company, these young Indians of such seemingly different appearance, can -no doubt- surprise any audience when showing just what Pannullo was looking for all those years: the richness of bodies in motion expressing the universal language of the soul. That is Pannullo’s finding in “SOUL PAIT”; the first
time ever Spain and India work together in an experience of this kind.. About the dance company: Dani Pannullo Dancetheatre Co. is known in the international dance scene
for his contemporary and urban vision of ancestral traditions that it presents under a new light that both preserves and transcends its roots. Dani Pannullo is also known for introducing in his urban contemporary dance shows dancers from multiple disciplines from Japanese butoh dancers, Egyptian dervishes and Flamenco dancers to acrobats and football free-stylers. India was always in his mind but only recently he had the opportunity, with the support of the Spanish Embassy in India, to visit the country and research on the Karalaripayattu tradition that fascinated him.
