Event Description : "Chronicle of a Death Foretold" English play by Manjari Kaul.

Improper Fractions and Instituto Cervantes in collaboration with the Embassy of Colombia in India and Delhi International Arts Festival present a theatrical adaptation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novella Chronicle of a Death Foretold. The story is of how a young girl's lost virginity, and thus lost honour is received. There is a murder that follows, but this narrative is no thriller. Before the crime is even committed, the whole village knows the where, when and why of it all.

The performance is an unusual combination of the use of storytelling technique and characters' first person accounts that are sometimes varying, some similar, some shaky, at times minutely detailed and some fading recollections of the murder. As the characters strain their memory or pour out a still open wound from the murder, the shadowy recounting of the past in Garcia Marquez's epic narrative reveals itself in magical and fantastic visuals. 

About the Artist : Manjari Kaul is an independent performer and theatre director. Her work engages with the understanding how we use our bodies to communicate, learn and comprehend real and imagined worlds.

About the theatre group : Improper Fractions came into being in the summer of 2012 as a group dedicated to exploring the incongruous, fragmentary, disruptive, off-key and awkward in theatre. We are interested in creating possibilities for intersections and parallel co-existence of different forms, patterns, languages of movement/ speech. All this while we experiment and play with the strange as well as familiar conjoining of imagination and reality.

IF has produced three major plays, Chronicle of a Death Foretold and That Photograph (performed at Akshara Theatre and Studio Safdar and The Storm (performed during the Short and Sweet Theatre Festival, Delhi 2012). We equally commit ourselves to introducing and nurturing theatre for the young organizing workshops on story telling, movement and improvisation for children.
