Event Description : An evening of Hindi Poetry by Moonweavers – Chaand ke Julaahe
Hindi is a modern Indian language of the 20th century. It is descended from the rural dialects of Northern India - Braj, Awadhi, Khariboli, Marwari, Maithili and Bhojpuri. After independence the Hindustani of Northern India has become Sanskritized into modern standard Hindi.
The literature and poetry of the “Hindi languages” can be broadly divided into 4 periods
Vir-Gathas (poems extolling brave warriors) – 11th–14th century
Bhakti era poems (devotional poems) – 14th–18th century
Riti or Srngar poems (poems of romance) – 18th–20th century
Adhunik literature (modern literature) – 20th century onwards
Today’s session is a reading by 3 Hindi poets with an introduction by Vivek Mishra and comments on their writing style and subject matter by Mangalesh Dabral. He will also read some of his own poems.
Mangalesh Dabral – Eminent Hindi poet. Recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award, Shamsher Samman and Pahal Samman. His books include five collections of poems, titled Pahar Par Laltein(Lantern on the Mountain, 1981), Ghar Ka Rasta (The Way Home, 1981), Hum Jo Dekhate Hain(That Which We See, 1995), Aawaaz Bhi Ek Jagah Hai (Voice Too Is a Place, 2000) and Naye Yug Mein Shatru (Enemy in the New Era, 2014); two collections of literary essays and socio-cultural commentary, titled Lekhak Ki Roti (Writer’s Bread, 1998) and Kavi Ka Akelapan (Solitude of a Poet, 2008); and a book of conversations, Upkathan (Substatement, 2014).
His poems have been widely translated and published in all major Indian languages and in Russian, German, Dutch, Spanish, French, Polish and Bulgarian and have been included in World Literature Today, Modern Poetry in Translation and The Little Magazine. He has translated the poems of Pablo Neruda, Bertolt Brecht, Ernesto Cardenal, Yannis Ritsos, Tadeusz Różewicz, Zbigniew Herbert into Hindi.
Vivek Mishra – Hindi writer and poet. He has published two collections of short stories and two poetry collections as well as publication in literary journals and magazines. An English translation of his poems titled’ Light Through a Labyrinth’ has been bought out by Writers’ Workshop, Kolkata and a Bengali translation of his short stories has been bought out by Daana Publications, Kolkata.
Amrita Bera – Writer, poet and translator. Writes in Hindi, Bengali and English. Her translations of short stories, articles and poems from and to within these languages have appeared in many literary journals and magazines. She has translated Vivek Mishra’s short story ‘Light Through a Labyrinth’. Her Bengali to English translations of Tasleema Nasreen’s articles have been coming out in the Hindi literary journal Hans for the past 3 years. Her Hindi translation of the 7th part of Tasleema Nasreen’s autobiography Nirvaasan was bought out by Vani Prakashan during the New Delhi World Book Fair this year. She has been felicitated with the Anjana Sahajwala Sammann for her work on Translation in 2012.
Abhinav Niranjan is a marketing & communication professional from Jharkhand. He has been writing poetry for more than 10 years and been a regular in the poetry recitals of Delhi. More than fifty of his poems have been published in three different anthologies printed by Poets Corner, Delhi Poetree and Sanmati Publishers. He has spent most of his early life in rural areas and smaller towns; which reflects in his distinguished style of writing.
Rati Agnihotri – Currently works as a Correspondent for CNC World TV, Xinhua Media Group, China. She writes poetry in Hindi and in English. Her English poems have been published in “Indian Literature”, “South Asian Ensemble”, “The Challenge”, “Dead Flowers: A Poetry Rag”, and “Muse India”. Her Hindi poems have been published in Parikatha and Samvadiya. Rati runs a poetry group ‘Moonweavers – Chaand ke Julaahe’ in Delhi.
