Abstract :
Delhi is one of the largest mega-cities in the world. As a Third World city, its development is strongly influenced by the multiple forces of globalisation. It is therefore, a fertile ground to study the process of hybridisation taking place in local architecture and urbanism. This lecture examines this process of hybridisation through the study of archival records of photographs and drawings of the city’s architecture and urban development from 1912 to 1962. Looking back at this critical period of the city’s evolution gives us the opportunity to investigate the current phenomena in a more detached historical perspective. The lecture focuses on the analysis of architectural and urban elements by identifying how those were affected by «foreign» cultures and local responses from within. The proposition it explores is how even external influences were transformed and to what extent these transformations and translations of elements were due to both external and internal exchange processes. The architectural elements analysed are the colonial plans of the city of New Delhi and Delhi Masterplan of 1962, architectural styles, residential typologies, neighbourhoods/colonies and public buildings; entirely based on «factual elements» but also on primary sources. The analysis of the contamination/hybridization between cultures has always been seen as a two-way process, gives us the opportunity to rethink and revise issues such as tradition, identity of places, cities and territory.  The documents that will be shown have been collected from the State Archive, National Archives of India, INTACH Archives, Institute of Town and Country Planning Organization, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Institute of Town Planners, Delhi Development Authority, School of Planning and Architecture, Central Public Works Archive, Kanvinde office, Nehru Memorial Library, Lalit Kala Akademi, Alkazi Foundation for The Arts, Royal Institute of British Architects (London), The British Library (London), Ford Foundation Archive (New York).
