Event Description : Indian Council for Cultural Relations in collaboration with Anveshana Society for Performing Arts invites you and your family to "Nagamandala" (A Contemporary Dance presentation by Indian and Foreign artistes) a play written by Girish.
Nagamandala" was originally written by GirishKarnad in Kannada- is a mystical story, It is the story of a young bride, abused by her husband and seduced by a cobra. NAGMANDALA is an experimentation. It highlighted the problem of woman’s desire, independence, fulfilment and transgression. According to Karnad, [Nagamandala} is the sotry of a young girl Rani where she sees her husband only in two unconnected roles- as a stranger during the day and as a lover during the night. Rani who is married to Appanna but who refuses to treat her better than a door mat. His affections are engaged elsewhere and poor Rani is locked in the house. It is the magic potion which Kurudavva, the blind woman, gives her to gain the affection of her husband, but which Naga(the snake) drinks, Naga awaken her womanhood and arouse her desires. The contradiction of day and night , Rani avoid the struggle between desire and knowledge - lover and husband . Rani keep a blind eye to all the tell tale signs which proclaim that the husband in the night and the husband in the daytime are not one and the same. she gets pregnant and breaks the news to Appanna. He immediately accuses her for adultery and says that he has not fathered the child.She is then asked to prove her fidelity by putting her hand in the snake hole and taking a vow that she has not committed adultery. It is a popular belief that if any person lies holding the snake in their hand, they will be instantly killed by the snake God. She comes out of the snake ordeal successfully, with her glory restored, her image idolized. She has turned into a goddess overnight.
However, her husband is not ready to accept that she is pregnant with his child and decides to find out the truth by spying on the house at night.
Appanna is shocked to see the Naga visiting Rani in his form, spending time with her and then leaving the house.Appanna gets furious with the Naga and indulges in a fight with him. Eventually, the Naga dies in the fight. After this incident, Appanna realizes his mistake and he accepts Rani along withthe child she is carrying.
