Event Description : Asia Bazaar 2014.

Dastkar, in partnership with Delhi Tourism, presents the second edition of Asia Bazaar! Craftspeople and crafts organizations from Pakistan, Nepal, Afghanistan, Maldives, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan,Uzbekistan and India come together with their Indian counterparts to share and showcase talents, techniques and products. The common strands of centuries-old cultural and craft heritage come together at the Dastkar ASIA BAZAAR in a meeting and celebration of skill sets, traditions and people.

A common cultural heritage unites the countries of the South Asian region. In 2013, Dastkar decided to bring together the crafts and craftspeople of India with their counterparts from 5 neighboring SAARC Nations: Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan and Afghanistan. The event was not only a success for the participants, but also great opportunity for visiting delegates, customers & participants from across the borders, to learn about each others’ cultures & traditions.

The bazaar acts as a thread of communication between craftspeople, states, countries, traditions, skills, and cultures. It becomes a platform where artisans can learn and understand the variations of their skills being practiced in other countries- like
Phulkari of Punjab and Pakistan,
Beadwork of Gujarat, Afghanistan or Saudi Arabia.
It also gives artisans an avenue to study fashion trends from across borders and what they need to keep in mind while trading their products with other countries. At the same time, the Bazaar also creates a bridge where they can interact and expand their ties with neighboring countries beyond business.

Besides creating trading ties, the Asia Bazaar gives an opportunity to many small-town artisans to present their skills which are at present languishing due to non availability of market or mis-match with the demands of the contemporary, urban market. Such bazaars / exhibitions give them a chance to interact directly with urban customers and gauge market feedback about their products and see the relevance of their craftsmanship in the urban market. The Bazaar is also a window to traditional crafts & indigenous cultures from different countries for customers. It is this awareness and understanding that gives support to small producers & artisans and encourages them to expand their business & disseminate their skills to the next generations.

Dastkar’s Asia Bazaar 2014, will feature craftspeople and crafts organizations from Pakistan, Nepal, Afghanistan, Maldives, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and their Indian counterparts to share and showcase talents, techniques and products.

Distinctive Kilim woolen rugs from Afghanistan will find matching echoes with hand-woven dhurries by traditional weavers from Telangana & Uttar Pradesh

Craftswomen from Gujarat embroidering Kutchi and suf will meet their counterparts from Sind and Afghanistan.

Kanthaand sujni embroidery link India & Pakistan, each with its own characteristic style and motif traditions.

Weaving traditions from Nepal meet those from Kotpad,

Odisha, Kutch and Gujarat. Each country and region shares a common heritage of amazing and varied craft traditions; each region and community developing its own unique skill directory and identity.

Textile craftspeople from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan & Kirgizstan bring to the bazaar, nomadic carpets, felted wool home accessories and urbane silk Ikats and brocades, to complement the hand-knotted rugs & crewel embroidery from Kashmir, and applique from Gujarat and Karnataka. Folk paintings from Madhya Pradesh,West Bengal and Rajasthan

Leather puppets from Karnataka will introduce visitors and international artisans with traditional folklore and storytelling techniques prevalent in India since ancient times.

Indian bandhini and shibori will brighten up the bazaar.
