Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to the Weekly Seminar on ‘The Search for the Alternative: Debating the origins of India’s strategic culture’ by Dr. Jayashree Vivekanandan, South Asian University, New Delhi.

Abstract:
Where does the intellectual exercise of tracing the origins of India’s strategic culture lead us? How do we read a discourse that exceptionalises the quintessential India? The talk locates the interface between International Relations (IR) and history within the Indian context, and finds that cultural interpretations of India’s strategic practice do not necessarily translate into greater sensitivity towards historical specificities. Culture moves out of the ambit of history; it does not owe its existence to any particular historical antecedent, predating and in that sense, existing outside history itself. Alternately drawing on instances from the medieval and colonial periods, this is a preliminary enquiry into the enduring fascination with the ‘pure at birth’ thesis that frames culture in essentialist rather than dynamic terms. The talk argues that recovering historicity in IR, including in Indian IR, is essential to acknowledging that disciplinary genealogies are eventually about the dynamics of power; about who dominates the discourse, who celebrates their history, and which construction becomes the archetype of a tradition.
