Games have always existed in cultures and gaming has become ubiquitous with the information technology boom. Through this residency, Khoj tries to explore the idea of game and play through the lens of contemporary art practice. From games as tools of social engagement and change making to games which are studies in hardcore lucid experiences, this show explores it all.
The participating artists are Mohini Dutta, Shradha Jain, Zuleikha Chaudhary, Krishnarjun Bhattacharya and Vinit Nikumbh.
Says Pooja Sood, Director, Khoj, : “Khoj would like to incubate and be a stage for the co-habitation of multiple kinds of actors in this emergent community of local and independent game makers. This community defies any neat slotting and categorizing into any grouping such as art, science, technology or entertainment. This makes it an opportunity for an intersection with an art space like Khoj that celebrates the liminality of practices and seeks to expand the notions of art practice.”
By creating a context for game developers, artists and game designers in India and beyond, Khoj hopes to achieve multiple ends. One, artists who have a conceptual interest in games can spend time and focused attention and make connections with experts to take their first few steps in this direction. Two, practitioners who would not otherwise interact within the conceptual and historical framework of art are given a unique opportunity to do so. Three, practitioners and researchers operating in the field set up exchange processes with practitioners in the space to facilitate the sharing of knowledge, references and skills. Khoj is structured around the media-based experiments that are formulated in practice. Games offer a unique challenge to connect different communities and facilitate exchanges that nurture innovations in the language, syntax and content in space.
