Event Description : "Gendered Citizenship: Manifestations and Performance" a talk by Dr. Priyadarshini Vijaisri, Associate Professor, CSDS, with Prof. Nivedita Menon (SIS, JNU) as the discussant.
A discrete cluster of itinerant bards, the Dakkalis, attached exclusively to specific castes/outcastes find mention in colonial accounts as “children of jati”. The origin myths narrated by the Dakkalis depart from the cultural conceptions of untouchability as rooted in organic impurity or taboo on beef eating to dangerous contagion. The prevalence of dualistic origin myths and religious beliefs around sacred, danger and contagion indicate deeper structural tension and its locus in the dual classification of castes into left and right hand groups. It also signifies a distinctive aesthetic of caste culture, that of performativity, and an autonomy by which their identity is accentuated in forging a link with the whole. Far from mere symbolism caste culture is sustained by continuous re-enactment of mythos, where archetypes are enlivened in the collective consciousness marked by a distinctive temporality that holds together a caste order.
Priyadarshini Vijaisri, Associate Professor, Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), is a historian engaged in researching the cultural histories of ‘outcastes’. She is currently engaged in ethno-historical research on the cognitive
system of ideas and cultural practices that signify the exceptional being of outcastes.
