Event Description : "Dhruvswar" a Dhrupad recital by Sanjeev Jha.
In India, the Pole Star is called ‘Dhruv Tara’. According to legend Dhruv, a young devotee, underwent severe penance to win the love and attention of Lord Vishnu. The word ‘Dhruv’ has thus become a synonym for something that is unwavering, unshakeable, unfaltering, as fixed as the evening star.
Dhrupad meaning ‘refrain’ is derived from ‘Dhruv-pada’, it denotes both, a form of poetry and a style of music in which the poetry is sung. Its slow and meditative pace where each swar (note) sounds firm and steadfast, arousing feelings of bliss or ananda. It is a part of the ‘bhakti’ or devotional tradition, which transcends religion.
Dhrupad is referred to in the Mughal vizier Abul Fazl’s Ain-i-Akbari of 1593. It is the oldest surviving style of music in the Hindustani music tradition in India tracing its history back to the Vedas. Historian Romila Thapar notes, "The Dhrupad tradition is a major heritage of Indian culture since it has a continuity which parallels that of Sanskrit literature or of classical sculpture. It has its roots in the recitations of the Sama Veda and has been nourished over the centuries by the traditions of devotional music and worship as typified in Bhakti, a tradition which continues to be part of present-day Indian culture."
Sanjeev is a disciple of world renowned Dhrupad Singers, Padmashri Gundecha Brothers (Shri Umakant Gundecha & Shri Ramakant Gundecha) of Bhopal. He has been receiving his Dhrupad training at the Dhrupad Sansthan (Gurukul) in the Guru Shishya Parampara since 2007. Sanjeev received his initial music training from Ustad Habeeb Khan (Hazipur) from 1994 - 1996 and Pandit Arun Bhaduri (SRA,Kolkata) from 1996 - 1998.
Sanjeev has done his Bachelors and his Masters in Music from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Delhi University (DU) respectively. He is the recipient of the Sir Dorabji Tata Fellowship For Advanced Study in Dhrupad and the Surmani Award in 2009.
He has performed widely in India including in Mumbai, Rajasthan, Bihar, UP, Chennai. Sanjeev also accompanied his Gurus and performed with them, on an international five-country (Singapore, Phillipines, Belgium, Argentina, Brazil) Dhrupad tour organized by ICCR, in October 2013.
Sanjeev Jha will be accompanied on the Pakhawaj by Ramesh Chandra Joshi who since 2008 has been learning the Pakhawaj from Shri Akhilesh Gundecha at the Dhrupad Sansthan, Bhopal. He has performed with many reputed artists throughout the country.
