Event Description : When I am silent, I fall into the space where everything is music ~ Rumi (1207 – 1273)

The effect that music can have on our lives, especially Indian music, is often lost by the social conventions that prevail at concerts: applause, talking before and after the concert, ceremonies, all of which take the attention away from the music itself. To help people experience the magical power of Indian music in a concert setting, Pt.Shubhendra Rao and Saskia Rao initiated the Silence Concerts movement.  In a Silence Concert the only sound that reverberates is music. There are no introductions, ceremonies, gimmicks, talks, speeches or applause.  The setting is serene, beautiful and set up to experience beauty within through the pure experience of music. Through controlling external influences that can distract listener and performer the concert experience is enriched.

Entering the auditorium for a Silence concert, the audience and artists leave behind their worries and daily masks, because they do not have to respond in word or gesture to the outside world. They can be gently led through a sublime journey within. What follows is that their experience turns within. The artist can share his music without playing to the gallery and the effect lingers after the concert, not interrupted by applause. The Audience and performer become one in a Silence concert and both are left with an introspective experience.

About the Artist : Composer and performer, Pandit Shubhendra Rao is amongst the foremost soloists of India. Distinguished as a musical bridge to many cultures, he creates an experience for his audience that "is not aimed at titillating the senses, but to seize the soul" (The Hindu, New Delhi). A protégé of world-renowned Sitar maestro, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Shubhendra has established himself “not only as a master of his instrument but also as a thinking musician, constantly endeavouring to carry his instrument beyond conventional boundaries“(Gateway magazine).

A child prodigy who started playing the Sitar at the age of 3, Shubhendra’s first teacher was his father, N.R.Rama Rao, a noted and close disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar. Shubhendra had his first lesson from the maestro at the age of 8 and in the ensuing years, he would travel the country to continue his learning. At the age of 18, he moved to Delhi to live with and learn from his Guru in the true Guru-Shishya tradition.

Hailed by critics and connoisseurs as a worthy successor to his Guru’s tradition, Shubhendra has performed internationally at major music festivals and prestigious concert halls like Carnegie Hall and on Broadway in New York, WOMAD festival in Guernsey, UK, Sydney Opera House in Australia, Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, Washington DC, the Edinburgh Festivals in Scotland, National Arts Festival in South Africa, Theatre de le Ville in Paris..
