Event Description : The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library cordially invites you to a Seminar on ‘Understanding Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah: The movement against princely rule, 1931-1947’ by Dr. Nyla Ali Khan, University of Oklahoma, USA.

Abstract : Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and his political organization, the National Conference fought the autocracy of the Dogra House and demanded that the Treaty of Amritsar be revoked and monarchical rule ended. He described autocracy in the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir as a microcosm of the colonial state. He saw his own movement as a ramification of the larger struggle for Indian independence. The movement did little to bolster the Sheikh’s position among members of the Muslim Conference, as it antagonized those Hindus and Sikhs of the princely state who venerated the Maharaja because they owed their political, economic, and religious privileges to him. In May 1946 the Sheikh was sentenced to nine years in prison for having led the movement against Maharajah Hari Singh’s regime. His defense against the charges leveled at him during the trial was an attempt to underline a strategic syncretism, aimed at fostering legitimacy for opposition to monarchical rule.

Speaker: Dr. Nyla Ali Khan is a Visiting Professor at the University of Oklahoma, USA and former Professor at the University of Nebraska-Kearney, USA.
