Event Description : DelhiByFoot presents Jung-e-Azadi: Special Mutiny of 1857 Commemorative Walk

Background :

Then : 10th May 1857
A mass mutiny by a garrison of native Indian Sepoys (soldiers) of the British East India Company in the dusty little town of Meerut near Delhi threw the country into turmoil. The revolt soon spread across the Northern parts of India and Delhi the capital of the crumbling, almost non-existent Mughal Empire was thrust into prominence. Thus started the 1st Indian War of Independence. The revolt spread like wild-fire in Northern parts of Indian and the rest as they say is history! For almost 15 months, hard & violent battles were fought, but finally the British Company soldiers using local help, advanced western arms & ammunition and a far better organized army quelled the ‘Mutiny of 1857’, as it was referred by the British.

Now : 11th May 2014
Exactly 157 years after that tumultuous days of May 1857, when Delhi was up in arms against the English forces or 'Angrez Firangis' we take Dilliwallas on a exploration of the strategically significant spots related to the Mutiny in Delhi to re-live the experience of the Revolt of 1857 and learn why Delhi was so important during India's 1st War of Independence. The walk covers one of Delhi’s major fort entrances which saw pitched fighting, memorials erected in the memory of the British & Indian(native) soldiers who lost their lives during the mutiny, Churches & cemeteries and more.
