Event Description : Khoj International Artists' Association presents 'Mountains to Mosque' a solo show by Masooma Syed

Exhibiting nearly thirty art objects which can be worn as jewellery pieces, and made out of mediums as diverse as silver, copper, bronze, old perfume bottles, paper, nails, feathers and more, this show is a delightful survey of how jewellery as body adornment is one of the most intimate of art forms.

Says Masooma Syed, who was born and brought up in Lahore and now lives between New Delhi and Pakistan: “Like textiles, jewellery has such direct relation to the physical body, jewellery object sits directly on the body, its weight and texture and size a constant reminder of its presence.”

In traditional and historical realm of all societies and cultures, jewellery’s functions and meaning has been defined as: attachment to the body, personal decoration, displaying socially meaningful codes, serving as portable and redeemable wealth, and mediation with the spiritual and emotional. Undoubtedly it has ability to touch people as a coded, portable, ornament, accessible by sensation. But jewellery as an art form is a strong vehicle of body expression. Once it gets stripped of familiar codes, traditional materials and meanings, it goes beyond the idea of commodity, utility as portable redeemable wealth and status. As a body centered ornament, adornment or embellishment it carries the strong message, challenges the conventions of body, rituals and its function.

She says: “I believe my practice responds to this particular sensibility where commonly understood craft of utility could be investigated and liberated from its stereotypes. The use of contradictory materials, contrasting images instantly can be recognized as a marker, ciphers in a sign language. My practice of jewellery making falls in the category of sculpture, where I’m trying to push its boundaries and limits both in form and content. There is a certain amount of deep and abiding love for small scale, for close inspection of detail, for precision, and for careful workmanship but more than that, it’s the joy of combining traditional with the non-traditional, precious with non precious material and changing the chemistry of scale, size and medium.”

“A worn art object has great potential to speak about human connectedness. It alters the meaning of adornment, the Precious and the Powerful, permanence and the ephemeral, sacred or profane and most of all, its eternal liaison with rebellion. It is the subtlest sense of “being” on a tiny scale.”

Born and brought up in Lahore, Pakistan, Masooma Syed studied painting and later studied MA in Visual Arts from National College of Arts, Lahore. Since then she has been involved in studio practice, and has exhibited in Pakistan and abroad, participating in several artist’s residencies and workshops.
