Event Description : Capital City Ministrels (CCM) Summer Concert 'Rhythms Of The World'
2014--A milestone year for the Choir. The Capital City Minstrels celebrates 20 years of “making music” this year !
This season brings together a potpourri of world music from different parts of the globe-
Arirang-the melodious love song from Korea, Tourdion-a sixteenth century French chant, Dana-dana an energetic song with the flavour of Hungarian folk. Amongst the contemporary pieces, the Choir will perform the theme song " May It Be" from the recent film Lord of the Rings, a choral version of the upbeat Jai Ho( in Hindi) from the Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire. Waka Waka, the World Cup anthem, originally performed and made famous by pop sensation Shakira is presented on the concert stage once again by CCM. To pay homage to the wonderful life of Nelson Mandela, there will be songs and rhythms with an African influence.
The singers will be supported by the well known Nise Meruno on Piano and Suchet Malhotra, with an array of percussion sounds adding special flavour.
CHOIR INFORMATION:
From a small group of eight singers brought together by Mrs Zohra Shaw, our first conductor , in 1994, that met in each others’ homes, CCM has grown to be a big singing group of more than 80 members this season. The Hungarian Cultural Centre has been our “singing home”, where we have practiced for several years and we are extremely grateful for their support and encouragement.
The Choir has been led by several conductors of different nationalities over the years. Each one of them has enriched the Choir’s musical experiences further, with their knowledge, musical styles. Above all, CCM gratefully acknowledges the dedication with which they have served the Choir. The present conductor is Ms Carolin Remy.
Over the years, choir members from Delhi and other countries have come in and then moved on to other places. The composition of CCM reflects a truly unique blend of singers from around the globe, many
of whom have stayed connected with each other by letters (in earlier days), email and networking sites in today’s day and age. Lifelong friendships have been formed and a special bond - a passion for singing
and performing together -connects each and everyone who has been with the Choir.
CCM has had the honour of participating in music festivals within India at Goa, performing in Srinagar & Gulmarg to commemorate Peace in the Valley and bringing music to children studying in Indian schools in the Hills such as The Doon School and Sanawar School. In the recent past, CCM has travelled to Europe and performed choral music in Hungary, France & Germany. CCM has also sung for the then President of India, Mrs Pratibha Patil and very recently on the occasion of Women’s day for for the Ministry of External Affairs.
